Which course can our student take in 2008 through Senior to Sophomore?

Georgia Southern University is currently developing Senior to Sophomore credit for senior-year courses in regional high schools. The courses available in each high school will differ according to which teachers and subjects meet university criteria. All of the courses provided in 2009 will be drawn from the Georgia Southern University core curriculum. Additional topics such as art and music may be added later.

How do we register our student for a Senior to Sophomore course?

With direct help from a Georgia Southern University Continuing Education Center staff member, students will register for their Senior to Sophomore class through the high school. After the pilot courses have been launched, we will convert to on-line registration and payment.

Visit the Students page for the required forms. Each student must also have a parent or legal guardian sign the registration form.

Who can register?

Senior to Sophomore is available only to high school students (in participating schools) who have completed a substantial portion of the college-preparation track of high school courses. They must also have the minimum ACT or SAT test scores for English and Mathematics that are required for regular University admission.

Furthermore, students applying for Senior to Sophomore must already possess an overall Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher in academic subjects.

Because all Senior to Sophomore students are formally enrolled in "for-credit" University courses, those who wish to participate in Senior to Sophomore must also have the approval of their parents and the school. Not all students who qualify will be interested in taking the courses available at their high schools. Students who qualify and choose to participate then enroll through the University admissions program, with the assistance of the Continuing Education Program Specialist.

How much is the tuition fee for one class?

Tuition is $134 per credit hour. Pre-calculus is a 4-credit hour class. Students who qualify for dual enrollment (Accel program or Senior to Sophomore) are eligible for HOPE funding and may choose to apply it to cover the majority of their tuition and technology fee. Of the entire expense for tuition and the technology fee, students using HOPE coverage need only pay the remainder of the technology fee. There is also a textbook allowance of $75.

Tuition is due at the time of registration (not application). Students registering for full-year sequence courses must pay tuition for the entire sequence before the start of the school year.

How is tuition paid?

Although most students are expected to choose the HOPE Scholarship option, some will pay tuition and the Technology Fee. These will be paid directly as a check or credit card payment.
What are the other expenses besides tuition?

Students enrolled for more than 4 credits must pay a $57 Technology Fee for each semester of enrollment. Again, students who are eligible may use HOPE Scholarship funds to cover this required fee.

The standard Admission application fee is waived for all Senior to Sophomore participants. Also, your student will not have to pay Georgia Southern University's Admission application fee later on, if he or she applies to attend Georgia Southern after graduating from high school.
So what process do we go through for my student to become a Senior to Sophomore participant?

Your student will need to submit an Admissions application form and his or her high school transcript. Upon admission, he or she will need to complete the Accel Program application form (since the two programs are similar, the same application form is used for both).

For the details and timeline, please visit the Students page and click on the How to Apply section at the top of the page.
How is Senior to Sophomore different from the Accel Program?

Any student who qualifies for the Accel program also qualifies for Senior to Sophomore.

Senior to Sophomore is quite similar to Accel, with the primary important difference that courses are taught on the high school campus by high school teachers. The following paragraphs describing the Accel program are copied directly from p. 19 of
Georgia Southern University's online catalog:

Effective Fall Term 2004, students who are receiving dual credit for high school courses and college degree-level courses from an eligible public or private college in Georgia will be eligible for the Accel Program.

Public or private HOPE-eligible high schools and postsecondary institutions are eligible to participate in this program. A high school student must be classified as an 11th or 12th grader to participate. Eligible high school courses include only core-curriculum courses of English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, and Foreign Language that can be used to satisfy the core-curriculum high school graduation requirements.

All hours paid for by the Accel Program will be included in the 127 semester or 190 quarter-hour HOPE credit hour cap. College degree-level credit hours that students earned while in high school prior to Fall 2004 will not count towards the cap. The Accel Program award for public colleges and universities will cover tuition, HOPE-approved mandatory fees (which are capped at FY 2004 levels), and a book allowance.

Students must apply by submitting an Accel Program Application form. The Georgia Department of Education (DOE) has produced and provided to the Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC) a directory of eligible public high school courses that can be substituted with college degree-level coursework and applied toward high school graduation requirements for dual credit students. Georgia Student Finance Commission contact information - 770.724.9025 or http://www.gsfc.org/.

Questions regarding this program should be directed to the student's high school counselor or Guidance Office or the Office of Admissions. Students should confer with their high school counselor to determine which courses are necessary for satisfying high school graduation requirements. Placement in these courses cannot be guaranteed.

*Students who are dual-enrolled during high school with a college or university other than Georgia Southern University must meet the University System of Georgia's joint enrollment requirements before credit will be awarded in transfer to Georgia Southern.
