Coastal Georgia Center Announces the 2009 Graduate Student of the Year and Runner Up.
Savannah State University Social Work Student Africa Simone Miller Receives Honor SAVANNAH, GA—June 22, 2009-- A Savannah State University student who is using her education to better her community has been named the 2009 Coastal Georgia Center Graduate Student of the Year. Africa Simone Miller is a mental health patient services assistant at the Veterans Administration Savannah Primary Care Clinic and is pursuing her Masters in Social Work degree from Savannah State. Miller won the honor because of the ways she is using her formal education in her community. Miller also worked at Veterans Administration clinics in Augusta and Dublin before working at the Savannah clinic. She has also performed volunteer work with Rebuilding Together, Savannah. Miller will complete six classes in the 2008-2009 Academic Year towards her Masters of Social Work degree at the Coastal Georgia Center.
Nahunta Elementary School Principal, Georgia Southern University Doctoral Student Timothy Sawyer Receives Runner-up award Georgia Southern University doctoral student Timothy Sawyer has been named the 2009 Coastal Georgia Center Graduate Student of the Year Runner Up. He is pursuing a Doctorate in Education degree with an emphasis in Education Administration from Georgia Southern University. Sawyer is the Principal at Nahunta Elementary in Brantley County Georgia. Sawyer won the honor because of the ways he is using his formal education in his community. In addition to his work with the Brantley County Board of Education, Sawyer is the upcoming President of the Brantley County Chamber of Commerce. Sawyer will complete six classes during the 2008-2009 academic year towards his Doctorate degree at the Coastal Georgia Center.The Center, located in downtown Savannah, is a University System of Georgia facility. It is operated by Georgia Southern University in partnership with Armstrong Atlantic State University, and Savannah State University. Georgia Southern University offers graduate programs in accounting, business, and education at the Center. Savannah State University hosts graduate programs in social work, urban studies, and public administration at the Center.
