John W. O’Brien has been involved with Advanced Placement Human Geography since the first Teacher’s National Institute at Mccalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1997. His background includes a Master’s Degree in Geographic Education from State University of New York at Buffalo. Since that time he has done graduate work in georgraphy at the University of Minnesota, University of Tennessee, Eastern Michigan, Ball State University and Macalester College. John has also received Fulbright Fellowships to China, Egypt and Sub-Saharan Africa as well as a U.S.-Japan Foundation Fellowship. 

Over the past seven years, he has been an instructor at many AP summer institutes and workshops as both a Midwest and Southern College Board Consultant.  He has also been a reader for several AP exams including Human Geography.  Over the past 27 years, John has had the opportunity to teach geography at colleges and high schools in New York, Minnesota and, currently in Naples, Florida.

Elfie Israel, a graduate of Barnard College, earned an M.A. from New York University and an Ed.D. from Nova Southeastern University. She has taught English and history in New York, the Bahamas, and Florida. After teaching Advanced Placement English Language and Advanced Placement English Literature for twenty years, she was placed in charge of professional development for a charter school. For three years, she was co-editor of the Florida English Journal. The English Journal, Florida English Journal, and the Eric Digest have published her articles on teaching strategies. She is co-author of Amsco’s Advanced Placement English Literature for students. She has trained new consultants for the College Board, has been an AP reader, and mentored teachers locally and nationally. She has also presented book chats for the College Board’s online presentations. Now retired, she is still active in many College Board programs: AP workshops, English Vertical Teacms, and Teaching and Learning Conferences.

John R. Struck has been teaching for 23 years beginning at Round Rock High School in central Texas and since 1987 in Fairfax County, Virginia. For the past fourteen years he has been teaching at the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology – this year he taught three sections of AP US history, and one each of world history since 1500 and 20th-century world history. John has been an AP US history reader for nine years, and has also been a consultant for the College Board in AP US history for the last six. This year he is writing curriculum for the ACT (two extended units for U.S. history and is serving on a teacher’s panel for the revision of the AP US history exam and course). In 2007 he had the honor of being designated a “Nobel Teacher of Distinction,” as he was nominated by one of his most outstanding students.

Charlie Hart is currently teaching at Shorecrest Prep in St.Petersburg, Florida, a small private coed day school. He has spent most of his career in the Chicago area but has also taught in Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, and Jordan. Though he is currently teaching AP World History and serving as a table leader in that discipline, he has also served as a reader in U.S. and European history.
