Using the following criteria, nominate a “High-Flying
School” for national recognition:
“High-Flying School” Criteria
• High Achievement
The school ranks at the 67th percentile or higher in at least one academic subject
in at least one grade level.
• High Poverty
The school’s student population is comprised of at least 50% of students
living at or below poverty level.
• Diversity of the Student Body
The school’s student population is comprised of 50% or more minority
students. Please describe the diverse composition of the student body.
• Community Collaboration
The school demonstrates high levels of collaboration with community and/or university
in addressing youth-at-risk issues within the school and community.
• Citizenship Development
The school provides opportunities for students to develop citizenship
skills.
• Democratic Education
School curriculum includes objectives and activities related to the growth of
students as individuals who are successful members of a democratic society.
Each school selected as a 2010 High-Flying School will receive an invitation and travel honorarium of $1000 per school, hotel room for three nights, and paid registration fees for two people at the National Youth-At-Risk Conference held in Savannah, Georgia at the Hyatt Regency, February 28-March 3, 2010. Each school will be recognized at an awards ceremony and will share their school success in a High Flying School Showcase. Nominations for 2010 High-Flying Schools recognition must be submitted using online submission form by December 1, 2009.
