"Walls Talking: Political and Cultural Murals Worldwide" Making special reference to Northern Irish murals, this illustrated lecture examines the relationship between art and social justice in the contemporary United States. A major element of the talk is the impact of the Mexican mural movement on U.S. murals, especially Chicana/o art and murals. Issues of race-ethnicity, class, gender, and identity politics will also be discussed as they relate to art as a form of social protest. Valerie Aranda, Associate Professor of Studio Art at Georgia College and State University, is an internationally recognized muralist and scholar of murals. She has coordinated community mural projects across Georgia, as well as in California, Arizona, and Texas. This concludes our lecture series in association with the Georgia Southern Museum Exhibit, “From Protest to Peace: Northern Irish Murals by the Bogside Artists” on display until January 20, 2013. Please join us at the Museum for this engaging talk cohosted with the Center for Irish Studies and the University Honors Program. Click here to download a flyer (PDF 188K) of this lecture on 1/16/13. Play a Part in Preserving
Great stories are meant to be shared... In that spirit, the Georgia Southern Museum is establishing a History of Georgia Southern exhibit, to be housed in the Nessmith-Lane Conference Center. There, thousands of conference participants, prospective students and parents, alumni, and other campus visitors will be inspired and amazed as they experience our University’s rise to prominence. This project will be named “The Presley Exhibition” in recognition of Professor Emeritus and Founding Museum Director Dr. Del Presley. Del is the author of numerous books and documentaries. His work, The Southern Century, is the definitive history of Georgia Southern. He is also a selfless living treasure of South Georgia history and culture. The Georgia Southern University Museum is interested in expanding the artifact collection to support this exhibit. The Museum encourages donations of scrapbooks, photographs, and artifacts that uniquely tell the story of the university's student life and development, objects that have not been part of the official record of Reflector yearbooks and George-Anne newspapers. If you think you may have something of interest to the collection, call Dr. Brent Tharp, Museum Director at 912-478-5444 or email btharp@georgiasouthern.edu. If you are interested in donating monetarily for the construction of the display cases, lighting, signage, digital imagery and other materials you can donate one of two ways: 1. Online Donation: Click here to donate via our secure website link. 2. Mail in Donation: Click here to download a donation form (PDF format, 396K) to complete and mail to the Georgia Southern University Museum, P.O. Box 8061, Statesboro, GA 30460-8061. For more information, please contact Pam Jones by email at pamjones@georgiasouthern.edu or by phone at 912-656-4243. We have secured half of the $100,000 goal in advance donations – including a generous lead gift by Del and Beverly Presley. We invite you to honor the Presley’s (and Georgia Southern) with a tax-exempt donation that will place your name on the plaque* recognizing these friends who have devoted more than four decades of service to the University. If you need further information about this project, I am happy to speak to you at any time. Sincerely, Brent Tharp *Only gifts of $1,200 and up will be recognized on the plaque.

"Thinking About Northern Ireland: The Trouble with the Troubles" Northern Ireland during the Troubles is often depicted as a place of unceasing violence and sectarianism. This presentation describes examples from fictional and historical accounts of the Troubles to show how daily life and individual imagination often defied the simple definitions of the conflict as an uncompromising battle of Catholics vs. Protestants and British vs. Irish. This is the first of two presentations to complement the Georgia Southern Museum Exhibit, “From Protest to Peace: Northern Irish Murals by the Bogside Artists” on display until January 20, 2013. Speaker, Peggy Lindsey teaches in the Department of Writing and Linguistics at Georgia Southern. Her research explores how written texts reflect cultural norms. Within Irish Studies, her current work is on constructions of Irish identity in contemporary Northern Irish novels. Please join us at the Museum for this engaging talk cohosted with the Center for Irish Studies and the University Honors Program. Civil War Heritage Day The Georgia Southern University Museum, Department of Sociology and Anthropology’s Archeology Team, and numerous reenactors present a day of demonstrations focusing on the heritage of the Civil War and the latest information on the excavations at Camp Lawton, the Confederate prison camp located in Millen, GA. Growing strife between North and South erupted in civil war 150 years ago on April 12, 1861, when Confederate artillery opened fire on Fort Sumter. To commemorate the Sesquicentennial, reenactors will present living history programs and demonstrations throughout the day at an encampment on Sweetheart Circle including artillery, musket firing, field surgery, blacksmithing, crafts, and more. Inside the museum, Georgia Southern University archeologists will serve as guides for the Archeology of Camp Lawton exhibit and they'll be on hand to discuss these national treasures and the continuing excavations at Camp Lawton. Come hear Dr. John Derden, historian and author of the soon-to-be-released book on the definitive history on Camp Lawton, speak about “What I have Learned from Researching Camp Lawton” at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Encampment & Museum Admission:* $5 per person includes admission to both the Encampment & Museum. FREE for Museum members and GSU Students! All proceeds help support the Georgia Southern Museum exhibition projects. Special thanks to Mr. Neil Dickey of the Buckhead/Fort Lawton Camp and Mr. Michael Sorrell of the Ogeechee Rifles Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and to the many, many living history reenactors they have organized for our encampment. Eagle Science Camp Retires so Project SENSE & Project BESST can Live ON!! 2010 was our last Eagle Science Camp and the links below illustrate the fabulous time had by all. In 2011, budget cuts affected our Museum’s school outreach programs, Project SENSE & Project BESST, which deliver science and social studies kits to public and private schools throughout
southeast Georgia serving 23 Counties and School Systems. These programs reach
approximately 10,000 students in classrooms a year with hands-on activities coordinated to
state and national standards. Our generous supporter, Planters Telephone Foundation, who sustained our Eagle Science Camp program for years, kindly embraced the opportunity to shift their support to our Project SENSE & Project BESST programs to help ensure these proven programs remained solvent. A HUGE, HUGE thank you to Planters Telephone Foundation for their extremely community-minded mission which enables us to reach many, many more students. Historically, Eagle Science Camp helped 44-48 deserving young middle-schoolers each year. Click here to explore the wonderful photos and posters that illustrate the great time had by the campers who attended our thirteenth and last year of this resident science camp in 2010, thanks to the generous financial support of Planters Telephone Foundation. This resident camp, which was by application only, allowed talented middle school students (rising 7th, 8th, and 9th graders) with excellent grades and their teacher’s recommendation the opportunity to live and study at Georgia Southern University. Laboratory explorations in biology, physics, chemistry, computers, mathematics and geology were taught by extremely personable Georgia Southern professors. Participants also got to enjoy more traditional camp activities such as swimming, t-shirt painting, and movies. Two sessions, 24 students each. Click here to learn more about Eagle Science Camp. Camp dates were typically the first two weekends after Memorial Day. For other camps offered at Georgia Southern University, click here. Please join us for a reception in honor of the Georgia Southern Museum’s re-accreditation by the American Association of Museums (AAM). Accreditation is the highest recognition afforded the nation's museums. Join us at the Museum at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 31, 2011 to celebrate this significant achievement and thank our Museum members, University faculty, staff, and students, Community Partners, AAM, Museum staff, and volunteers for their contributions to the Museum’s success. Accreditation is a very rigorous process that examines all aspects of a Museum's operations. To earn accreditation, a Museum first conducts a year of self-study, and then undergoes a site visit by a team of peer reviewers. AAM's Accreditation Commission, an independent and autonomous body of Museum professionals, then considers the self-study and visiting committee report to determine whether a Museum should receive accreditation. The Georgia Southern University Museum was first accredited in 1999 and now has been re-accredited signifying its excellence to the Museum community, governments, funders, outside agencies, and the Museum-going public. As an important friend and supporter of the Museum, we hope you will join Georgia Southern University President Brooks Keel and, by video, Mr. Ford W. Bell, President of the American Association of Museums to celebrate this achievement. Missed the lecture?? No worries, as you can click here to download an MP4 Podcast of Mr. Vaughan's presentation, "Confederate Faces in Color," approximately 1hour & 20 minutes. Exhibit Lecture & Reception:
David Wynn Vaughan Join us for “Confederate Faces in Color,” a presentation by the“Portraits in Gray: A Civil War Photography Exhibit” collector, David Wynn Vaughan. Reception immediately following at the Museum where visitors can tour the exhibit, talk with Mr. Vaughan, and have him help identify any period Confederate and/or 19-century images and give conservation tips to help preserve your family photos. David Wynn Vaughan, a native Atlantan, began seriously collecting Confederate images over 20 years ago and has amassed the largest and most significant collection of Georgia-related Confederate images in the nation. The crown jewel of his efforts is to amass the eight of twelve known rare Georgia Military Institute cadet images. David's collection also holds a broad spectrum of important pieces relating to the wider conflict which documents the photographic history of the period. Seventy images from his private collection are featured publicly for the first time in the traveling exhibit“Portraits in Gray: A Civil War Photography Exhibit” now on display at the Georgia Southern Museum. David once said, "Images...represent a time capsule, a link to the past. To hold an image and look into the soldier's eyes, just as he was the day it was taken, always gives me goose bumps." This exhibition offers the same experience for the visitor. They are a true link to the past. David's presentation will feature selected period images from his collection which were beautifully hand colorized and tinted moments after they were taken. Additionally, he will discuss 19th-century photography, the coloring processes, Confederate uniforms and insignia, and elaborate on soldier's personal stories. David requests that you bring any period Confederate and/or 19th-century images and he has agreed to help identify and give conservation tips to help preserve your family photos. |
